In our first story, Las Vegas casinos paid out 4 massive jackpots last week, each worth over $1 million. It all started on Friday when the lucky winner struck gold with a $1,089,850 jackpot while playing the Buffalo Gold Grand Progressive slot machine at the Treasure Island casino.

Two days later, a Southern California woman had the lady luck smile upon her while spinning the Wheel of Fortune slot at the Circa Las Vegas. She hit the jackpot worth $1,075,234.28.

Across town, another gambler got lucky at the Pai Gow tables. Quoclong Pham from Washington nailed the $1,393,273 progressive jackpot.

The winning streak ended on Tuesday with a Hawaii woman winning $1,025,602 on the Wheel of Fortune Double Diamond slot machine at Main Street hotel-casino.

Next up, the Puerto Rico gambling market is getting its first high-end casino establishment. Connecticut-based Foxwoods, owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, has opened its first casino in the Caribean. It's located at the Fairmont El San Juan resort in San Juan. The tribe already operates the biggest casino in North America, Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Connecticut.

Foxwoods is the first major gaming brand to tap into this potentially lucrative market. Their arrival should also provide a significant economic boost to the island economy.

The gaming action will take place at the 15,000 square feet gaming floor., The new casino features over 300 latest slot machines and 14 table games. For now, the casino is open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

In our next story, the developers of the proposed new casino in St. Tammany Parish have got their most prominent endorsement yet. Earlier this week, Louisiana sports icon, Drew Brees, expressed his support for the project.

The new casino and resort complex is being developed by Peninsula Pacific Entertainment. The LA-based company is planning to invest $325 million in the project but first has to receive approval from the local voters. In an effort to get the voters on their side, P2E has pledged to donate $35 million to the Parish which will be used for the development of the new youth sports complex. The prospect of the new youth sports center in the area was the main draw that attracted the former NFL star to endorse the project.

In our last story this week, Maryland is set to become the 32nd state with legalized sports betting. On Thursday, the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Review Commission approved sports betting applications from five casinos. Maryland bettors will likely be able to place their first bets in the next couple of weeks.

The approvals came after a long delay, as not all members of the commission were in favor of the decision. Some of them feel that legalized betting will increase the crime rate in the area. Others think that minority-owned casino operators have been given unfair treatment and that the process favored the major players in the casino industry. However, some applications are expected to arrive at a later date, so the commission may award even more licenses after the initial five.
